For this year’s Cruinniú na nÓg we want children to be inspired by nature and to come explore life Under the Tree with us.  Our upstairs workshop will be transformed into the amazing natural world that exists ‘Under the Tree’, in a whole day of ‘in-person’ fun, including activities suitable for all ages from 11 - 4pm.

Lots of exciting things happen under a tree – animals burrow, plants grow, birds feed, insects crawl, and humans take shelter from the rain and enjoy their shady branches in the sunshine. Our physical and mental health benefits hugely from connecting with nature, and we can learn much from the rhythms of the natural world.  It’s important to always keep our eyes open, we never know what exciting and wondrous things we might see!

Once again, we will be working with our amazing art tutors, Mags Rudnicka & Paulette O’Donovan, as well as the queen of storytelling that is Mary Hickey.

For budding animators, TUS Digital Animation students Leah Macken and David Power will engage older age groups (teenagers) in a series on online activities/workshops using the theme of ‘Under the Tree’.

Because of our focus for this year’s Cruinniú na nÓg on the complex ecosystems that exist ‘under the tree’ we are committing to using recyclable/biodegradable materials as much as possible to reduce waste. The day’s planned activities will use/reuse paper and other natural & recyclable materials.

From 11am-

Story Time with Mary Under the Tree

Mary Hickey is the undisputed queen of storytelling in our eyes! In this session Mary will read several stories related to the theme, and as always there will be plenty of interactivity with games to play and bugs to hunt!

From 12pm-

Make your own Terrarium

A terrarium is like an aquarium, but for plants instead of fish. It is made in just about any transparent container. It is planted to look like a miniature garden or forest enclosed in its own little world. You can easily make a beautiful terrarium yourself. Join Paulette to create one to take home with you.

Flip Book Animations with Leah & David

We are delighted to be joined by talented Animators Leah Macken & David Power who'll guide you through how to make some super cute flip book animations, and will be on hand to answer any of your questions. They'll also demonstrate how character animators and background artists work together to make an overall scene. If you like animation, then don't miss this!

Paper Bugs & Paper Flowers

Mags has some wonderful ideas for paper crafts and in these sessions you'll learn some of her techniques. You can bring home your creations or add them to our forest scene under the tree - what will you make?

Pebble Painting

Pebble painting or rock painting is the art of decorating rocks, stones and pebbles using paints, pens and other craft items. Adding embellishments to rocks to decorate them is easy for all abilities. Make a ladybird ... or maybe a bumblebee or some other creature, real or mythical. Your choice is only limited by your imagination!

Mindful Mandala Colouring Book

We thank the lovely Alex Koster, of Roots & Wings (check out her website here: https://rootsandwings.ie/  for allowing us to share her Mindful Nature Mandalas Colouring Book with you on the day. Alex offers training and education in the areas of Mindfulness, Ecotherapy and Nature Education, and is passionate about human and planetary health and helps to support people in making positive changes in their homes and work environments.

We will also have an activity corner for tots, and a coffee corner for the grown-ups. Animators Leah and David will also share a video piece created for YouTube about their process, allowing older kids to gain a deeper understanding of the animation process.
