STAC is delighted to once again partner with Junction Arts Festival to present Presence, a system of interactive sounding objects created by Ed Devane.

The installation consists of three new sound sculptures that interact with visitors through mechanical and electronic means as well as collaborative approaches, to create sequences of musical sounds.

Presence I is a collection of acoustic and electronic sound sculptures hanging from the ceiling reacts to foot traffic below in unpredictable ways: a degree of uncertainty and randomness is baked into the logic underlying the system. Taking this idea of unexpected results a step further, and in a way designed to involve a deeper engagement from exhibition visitors, Presence II presents a physical sequencer in the form of a large rotating disc that activates sounding processes and events.

Presence III is a small, free-standing instrument that responds to interactions with the upwardly facing sensor. The piece directly sonifies the sensor data within a range as a sine wave of variable frequency between 80Hz - 1023Hz. The amplified output excites the acoustics of the arts centre, producing reverberations and filtering effects depending on the relative position of the listener.

Chance and randomness will come head to head with determinism and the will of the system.

Ed Devane is a sound artist and instrument designer based in Donegal. Beginning his creative career as an electronic music producer, his work has broadened over the years to include interactive installation, electronic instrument design, community projects and workshop facilitation relating to music and sound. Much of the inspiration behind his installation work is to use technology and instrument building to encourage creative encounters and collaborations between participants. Ed has recently produced installations for Science Gallery Dublin, The Ark, Galway City of Culture 2020, Big Bang! Festival and Science Foundation Ireland.

Two exploratory instrument building and sound design workshop will also take place -

Sat 2nd July 11- 1pm -  Instrument building workshop for Families

Ed will demonstrate how everyday materials and recycled objects such as plastic containers and tubes can be turned into a variety of noise makers and simple instruments.
