MIXTAPE Curated by Helena Tobin, works from Year 3 students of Limerick School of Art and Design Photography, Film Video Sculpture Combined Media programmes. South Tipperary Arts Centre Nelson St. Clonmel Launches 23rd Jan, 6pm Programme of events run until 15th Feb And I said: OK. Who is this really? And the voice said: This is the hand, the hand that takes. This is the Hand, the hand that takes. Mixtape. It’s a curated project. It’s a record. It’s a negative space, a pause between, a rewind, a remix. It's a love poem. It's a cure for a broken heart or a heart in full on crush mode. The mixtape, endearing to many of us and a foreign notion to others. The mixtape was a rudimentary constructed series of soundscapes and heart shaped boxes all carefully pirated from existing tapes or moments between Disk Jockey rants that you could hold down two magic buttons Play Record to create a unique and invaluable record to give to your best mate or lover. Using this notion, abstract and familiar the students of Limerick School of Art have compiled an exhibition of their moving image works to give you an immersive and experiential installation of video, sound, moving image and film. The works presented here are from year 3 undergrad students studying Sculpture Combined Media and the discipline of Photography, Film Video to give you a mixtape peppered with humour, horror, love and loss. You start your play list as you chose, your experience is personal, as we hope this journey through the gallery is too. This references to popular culture are of course Trojan Horses to conceptual work that expands the gambits of commentary on mental illness, abuse, capitalism, toxic gender roles and that feeling of being utterly overwhelmed by the world we live in. Don't let that put you off! Just like the present of a mixtape, play it, give it a go. We promise you you will laugh, you will be moved to tears, you will want to create your own.
