WOMEN OF THE RESISTANCE; 101 years of women's rights A research exhibition by collaborative artist Theresia Guschlbauer Official Launch: 23rd May, 6pm South Tipperary Arts Centre exhibition runs from 23rd May - 14th June Following on last week’s lecture by UCD Professor Dr. Mary McAuliffe, collaborative artist Theresia Guschlbauer’s project on the Women of the Revolution continues with a research exhibition opening this coming Thursday 23rd May at 6pm under the title: Women of the Resistance: Activism, Protest Practice. The exhibition explores the revolutionary acts of these women, through documents, objects and images. Through defiance via marches, protest, banners and audacious incidents, these women drew attention to the issues that they cared passionately about. This project is part of the Decade of Commemoration celebration, during which artist Theresia Guschlbauer is revisiting her Women of the Rising re-enactment project which involved 65 Tipperary based women in an exploration of women’s role in the 1916 Rising. Using this as a starting point, Theresia is exploring the 1916 women activists coming up to and in the aftermath of the Rising, when many issues such as national sovereignty, women’s franchise, anti-conscription and prisoner’s rights were being campaigned for. Over the period of the exhibition, a weekly braiding circle will take place on Tuesday mornings (10.30am-12.30pm), during which the personas and gestures of the women activists will be explored and discussed via stories, fabrics and threads. The bold and creative means used by the women to bring attention to the issues close to their hearts will be highlighted and foregrounded. Additional tours/workshops of the exhibition are available on requests. For more information on workshops and exhibition tours, at 2candoarts@gmail.com or 086 8225054 More details available on the arts centre website: http://www.southtippartscentre.ie and on Facebook: @Southtippartscentre The project is collaboration between 2cando Arts, the County Museum, Tipperary Heritage Office and South Tipperary Arts Centre.
